New York Attorney General Eric T. Schniderman announced a settlement with Young Adult Institute, Inc. (YAI) on January 18, to resolve allegations that they defrauded Medicaid. YAI allegedly inflated expenses on its annual reports to the state to receive funding it was not entitled to, falsely indicating that that staff members worked on programs and at sites where they never worked. In addition, YAI allegedly listed administrative staff as clinical social workers and improperly categorized fundraising expenses.
YAI was investigated after a whistleblower filed a complaint that YAI was submitting inflated expense reports. Of the $18 million settlement, $10.8 will be returned directly to the New York State Medicaid program.
