According to statistics released by the non-partisan Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, there were 903 prosecutions during the first eight months of 2011, as compared to 731 prosecutions for all of 2010. If the current rate continues, prosecutions are set to rise 85% over last year.
The rise has been attributed to increased enforcement efforts by the Obama administration. In February, the Medicare Fraud Task Force executed a take-down of 111 doctors, nurses, and executives for falsely billing Medicare, the largest since its creation. The Task Force has already obtained as many convictions in the first eight months of 2011 as it obtained in all of 2010.
Last year, the government recovered $4 billion from health care fraud cases alone.
