Kentucky-Based Nurses’ Registry Faces Medicare Kickback Allegations

On Friday, the Department of Justice filed an amended complaint against Nurses’ Registry, a home health agency, adding allegations that it provided cash and tickets to sporting events and concerts as an inducement for doctors and their staff to refer patients to Nurses’ Registry.  Medicare laws prohibit providers from submitting claims for services which were fraudulently induced.

The lawsuit was initiated by former employees of Nurses’ Registry in 2008 and the Department of Justice intervened in the lawsuit in July of this year.  Alicia Robinson-Hill and David A. Price, the relators in the case, alleged that Nurses’ Registry executives encouraged employees to bill for more expensive services than those actually provided and to provide services to patients that were not medically required.  According to Robinson-Hill and Price, Nurses’ Registry’s fraudulent billing practices had continued for almost a decade and cost the government millions of dollars.
