Today the federal government announced its decision to intervene in what is surely one of the most star-studded FCA cases in recent memory: the qui tam suit filed against Lance Armstrong by his former teammate Floyd Landis.
The government claims a financial interest in the highly publicized doping saga because of the multimillion-dollar sponsorship deal between Armstrong’s former cycling team and the U.S. Postal Service. Federal authorities argue that the agreement, worth over $30 million, carried contractual promises to abide by all competition rules, including those banning performance-enhancing drugs. But in a recent televised interview, Armstrong confessed to Oprah Winfrey and the world that he used banned substances while competing. Consequently, the government alleges, the team was never entitled to USPS sponsorship funds.
