BP Faces $25 Million Lawsuit over “Double-Dipping” State Fund and Insurers

The oil company British Petroleum (BP) faces a $25 million lawsuit filed by the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the state’s Petrofund in an attempt to recover money that the company collected for cleaning up leaking underground petroleum tanks. The state alleges that, from 1988 to 2012, BP obtained over $25 million in reimbursements from the Petrofund for cleaning up polluted properties in Minnesota, while also receiving payments from its insurance carriers that covered the same cleanup costs. This is the fourth and largest case that the state has brought against an oil company for allegedly “double-dipping” from the state fund and private insurers. Last July, Chevron, ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips paid $7.4 million to the Petrofund as settlement payment.
