Since sequestration first went into effect in 2013, the IRS has been operating under automatic budget reductions. According to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen at a recent conference of whistleblower attorneys, the IRS is one of the few federal agencies that has not had their budget restored. As a result of the continued budget cuts, the reductions in whistleblower awards first announced in 2013 will continue through September 2015, or until sequestration is no longer in effect. According to the IRS’s recent announcement, awards made to whistleblowers between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015 will be reduced by 7.3 percent.
