The hospital chain HCA Inc. will pay $16.5 million to settle allegations that it violated the federal False Claims Act and other statutes, the Justice Department announced today. The allegations concerned relationships between HCA’s subsidiary companies and a Tennessee physician group, Diagnostic Associates of Chattanooga. Federal authorities accused the subsidiaries of paying Diagnostic illegal kickbacks via such schemes as renting office space from the organization at above-market rates.
