California Attorney General Kamala Harris has vowed to use the state’s False Claims Act as part of an effort by her new Mortgage Fraud Strike Force to pursue cases of fraud.
The new force, which consists of 25 attorneys and investigators, will focus on individuals, institutions and municipalities, and will investigate the entire loan process, from origination to securitization.
The Attorney General insists the effort will only be the first of many to combat what her office believes to be rampant mortgage fraud in California. Legal aid attorney Dorothy Herrera Settlidge agrees, claiming fast enforcement with immediate payoff is necessary to address the many currently identifiable people apparently engaged in fraud. Last year more than half a million homes were foreclosed on across California.
