Doctor and Wife Use Craigslist to Commit Millions in Healthcare Fraud

A New Jersey Doctor and his office manager wife pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud after paying men without medical licenses as little as $10 an hour to treat and diagnose patients.

Yousuf Masood ran a clinic, while his wife Maruk Masood hired employees, assigned providers, and managed appointments. In 2009 Dr. Masood knowingly hired three men who, after graduating from medical schools in the Dominican Republic and West Indies, had failed to receive medical licenses in New Jersey. The Doctor found two of these men on Craigslist.

Dr. Moosad then allowed the three men to treat and diagnose patients, submitting Medicaid and Medicare bills fraudulently claiming he logged more than 20,000 patient visits. In 2009, Dr. Moosad was the state’s leading Medicaid drug provider, writing $3 million more worth of prescriptions than his nearest competitor. The Doctor and his wife were ordered to pay more than $1 million and could face 10 years in prison. Charges against the three hired men of conspiracy to commit health care fraud are still pending.
