Drugmaker to Pay $150 Million for Paying Doctors to Prescribe Powerful Opioid

Insys Therapeutics announced that it had reached a deal to pay at least $150 million to resolve a federal investigation into allegations that it illegally paid kickbacks to doctors to prescribe Subsys, a powerful opioid containing fentanyl. Under some circumstances they could end up paying an additional $75 million.

The settlement comes after the federal government intervened in five whistleblower lawsuits and criminally charged several executives in the scheme.
