CFTC Releases Annual Enforcement Results, Including Landmark Whistleblower Recovery

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission released its annual enforcement results, reporting that its enforcement division recovered over $2.5 billion in restitution, disgorgement, and civil monetary penalties during the past fiscal year.  In addition, the agency filed 82 enforcement actions.  The CFTC stated that the results “demonstrate[] its continued commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring market integrity.”

The agency also reported that the “Whistleblower Program’s importance to the [Division of Enforcement] continued to grow in terms of leads, successful enforcement actions, and whistleblower awards.”  Of note, the CFTC awarded $200 million to a single whistleblower, the largest ever award given to a single whistleblower under the Dodd-Frank Act by either the CFTC or U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.  With that award, as well as others issued over the fiscal year, “the total sanctions ordered in all whistleblower-related enforcement actions surpassed the $3 billion milestone.”
