Elevators

In November 1997 Getnick & Getnick LLP was appointed by the New York City Department of Investigation (“DOI”) as an Independent Private Sector Inspector General (“IPSIG”) for a major City elevator company following the indictment of numerous Department of Buildings elevator inspectors for receiving bribes from elevator companies to expedite and perform other illicit services related to inspections.

The IPSIG team conducted an ongoing review of employee expense reports and petty cash transactions, a customer gift analysis, and a review of the company’s estimating and bidding procedures as part of the effort to guard against any ongoing bribery schemes. Jobsite monitoring included code of conduct compliance and evidence (if any) of drug or alcohol abuse and ongoing attempts to solicit bribes. The IPSIG team addressed the company’s relationship with minority coalitions, including investigative coordination with the DOI and the NYPD Major Case Squad, as a result of which the company terminated its relationship with the coalitions.
